This was unfortunately proven to be true. On September 15, 2012, the two combatants squared off in the ring, and from very early on Álvarez’ size and experience began to show through, knocking Lopez down in the second, third, and fourth rounds en route to stopping him in the fifth round after referee Joe Cortez determined he was taking too much punishment.
On 28 September, 2019, Lopez fought fellow veteran John Molina Jr. Lopez was ranked #8 by the WBC at welterweight. In April 2008, Lopez fought a war in a nationally televised bout with 23-3 Edgar Santana in Miami, Florida. Despite sending Santana to the canvas twice in the eighth round, Lopez wound up on the short end of another controversial majority decision. Bouncing back from that setback, and realizing the devotion he had to make to preparation, he hasn’t lost since. Seven months later, Lopez returned to action in Southern California by knocking out veteran Alex Perez in the second round.
Lopez – fighting exclusively in Southern California — won all three of his fights in 2009, starting with a split-decision win in April over 15-1 Patrick Lopez, who tasted the canvas in the fifth round but managed to finish the bout on his feet. Four months later, Lopez shutout Sergio Joel De La Torre in a dominant performance and culminated the unbeaten year by stopping 15-3 Anthony Mora, who failed to answer the bell for the fourth round.
